Backstory ramblings:
In known history, the Sunset Cloud kingdom has only ever had females as the actual rulers
The kings are secondary, important for the continuation of the monarchy rather than holding any power
The heir to the throne has always been identified as the first born female, who has always had pale blue skin, unlike the common dusty red
With this generation of royals though, neither of the girls born carried the trait that would mark them as the next ruler
and then this little guy was born
And a bit of drabble about why he’s a ‘princess’
Firstly, the very idea of a male ruling would throw the kingdom into confusion
Secondly, the Queen is very ashamed of being the mother of such an abnormality; no matter how much she loves him, he’s still a ‘freak’
Only one heir may exist alongside the ruler; no matter how many more children are born, while the first heir is alive no more shall be born
Any heir killed by unnatural means (murder, manslaughter, even a simple accident) will throw the kingdom into darkness and monsoonal rains; the fact that less women were likely to be in dangerous positions was originally part of why the lineage showed only in females, but as the kingdom developed this has balanced back to neutral (and thus a male heir is actually a good sign but no one knows that)
So, he is a ‘princess’ for the people and his family, and because there is nothing anyone can do about it
He understands ‘princess’ is a title and knows he is a boy and is different from past leaders, and he’s determined to not let that impact on how he rules
While he loves the small chances to cover himself up and play outside in his ‘commoner’ garb, he doesn’t mind the formal/ceremonial dress at all (I mean look at it, who wouldn’t want to be shrouded in colour like that)
Some notes about Sunset Cloud kingdom folk:
Typical skin shades range from pale red to deep purple-ish colours, but are rarely vivid; those born with vivid skin are destined to be performers and cloud gatherers as they usually have stronger powers
Typical hair colour is white, with tinges of yellow, orange, blue or purple. As they grow older, the tinge grows stronger from the roots of their hair
It is traditional not to cut the cloud-like growth of hair; though it seems large, hair can usually be twisted done to a reasonable size and pinned together to manage it
The royal family and select upperclass folk (usually those of red hair tint) have a monopoly on outrageous displays of colour. While common folk may have one or two clothing items or possessions in vivid colour, most of the things they own are paler colours, diluted shades of sunset colours
